Family trip to Zoo Negara

National Zoo, Malaysia
Amir and I love animals, so the family visited Zoo Negara together for the first time yesterday. I was particularly looking forward to seeing the insects, reptiles, amphibians and penguins, and although I'm sad to say that many parts of the zoo was a disappointment, there were a few highlights.

Near the entrance, there's a donation box for the Asian elephants that call Zoo Negara home. They need a new enclosure very badly, so do make a donation if you're there.

Fun with homemade 'playdoh'

Today Amir and I had lots of fun making and playing with homemade playdoh. To make uncooked playdoh, just mix a cup of flour with 2 heaped tablespoons of salt, add some water and a few drops of oil, and voila! I didn't have food colouring on hand today, so I added some turmeric powder to make my playdoh yellow. Incidentally, turmeric has antiseptic qualities too. If you like, you can add glitter or scented oils to your playdoh to make it more interesting!

Doesn't Amir look like a pro kneading that dough?

Bloke Blog: What I made @ Venusbuzz.com

Isn't this caterpillar awesome? It's just one of the cool critters that Scott Bedford of whatimade.com, had made from - a pencil and paper clips!

I think Scott is one of the most talented and coolest blogging dads out there, and so I just had to write something about him on Venusbuzz.com:

Each of Scott's projects come with step-by-step instructions with the most fabulous illustrations that I've seen online, so don't forget to check out What I Made and get creative!

Family trip to the National Planetarium, KL

AmirSpaceSuit
My space exploring boys

My 6-year old son, Amir, has been expressing an interest in planets and space exploration lately, and so his father and I took him to the National Planetarium yesterday. This would be our family's first trip there. We arrived at 11am sharp, just in time to catch a show at the Teater Angkasa (Space Theatre), which has an impressive dome-shaped screen.

The breathtaking film we saw, Passport to the Universe, was in itself worth the trip to KL on a busy Sunday morning. Narrated to great effect by Tom Hanks, and developed by the American Museum of Natural History and NASA, the show takes you on "an unforgettable voyage of billions of light-years, from our home planet and the Milky Way galaxy, to the edge of the universe." It was really awesome, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone, especially parents! It's not expensive either, you only need to pay RM3 per adult and RM2 per child to see a show here.

Planetarium Steps
Working up a sweat.

The Planetarium, situated at the Lake Gardens, is pretty easy to get to, and once you're there, you shouldn't have much trouble with parking. Once you've parked, however, you're going to have to make a rather monumental climb up some steps. Kind of symbolic of going to space, I feel, and I was rather thankful for the workout, as I had a rather heavy breakfast!
